Battlestar Galactica: In A Story, Events Have Meaning
Firstly, I should admit that I was never a fan of the original TV series – which actually scarcely impinged on my consciousness, as far as I can recall. But Ron Moore’s re-imagining of it….ah, now this is a cat of an entirely different colour. Myself and SuperSusan came to it originally on the back of recommendations from a variety of sources, and got totally hooked, eventually watching it on the UK transmission up until about half way through series 3, I think, when for some reason we lost track. But recently we bought the boxed set (which I have to say is shoddily presented, with no episode summary booklet) and the 2nd half of season 4 to round it off, and now we`re working our way through it.
Hmm, very interesting. As some reading this might already know, I have a critical mindset which is usually on and scanning all the time. Having now reached the start of season 2 I can say that BSG is undoubtedly one of the finest pieces of visual SF thus far created – the charactersation, the acting, the scriptwriting, the cinematography, the FX, all are top notch, placing this series head and shoulders above almost anything else on American TV and just lightyears ahead of anything created here in the UK (In fact, I`d have to go back to stuff like I Claudius or Smileys People to come up with something comparable). However (ah, ye knew there’d be a qualification), watching it for the 2nd time I’m starting to notice the religious/faith-based subplot and the mysterious events that seem closely connected to it and….hmm, just wondering what R Moore’s intent is with this. Oh, it so happens that I know very little about what happens in season 4 and the climax so I am looking forward to discovering the full unfolding of the epic, and finding out if the denoument succeeds (and please, no spoilers!).
