Ah, So That’s What Sunlight Looks Like…
Uh huh, and yr hmble scribe emerges blinking from his Cubbyhole of Solitude and breaths deep the clean air of Ayrshire…
Indeed, yes, it is true – Humanity’s Fire vol 3, The Ascendant Stars, is done…in 1st draft, anyway. Weighing in at 147 thou-and-a-few words (which is really weird since the 1st two books in their final drafts came to 147 thou-and-a-few as well). There now begins the exacting, nay, demanding process of revisions, proofreading, catching typos, etc, before the final version is allowed to glide forward to its metamorphosis into that thing of beauty, the many-paged delight that is a book (or an ebook’s array of electrons, y’dig?) Anyway, here’s some evidence for ya:
And as chance would have it, yet further evidence that I is a writer, innit, have come to light:
So what you are seeing are, L to R - vol 2, The Orphaned Worlds, UK mass-market edition, which will be published on March 3rd; then there is the german edition of the same, published back in early January by Heyne; and at the end the m-market of vol 1, Seeds of Earth, which, to my amazement, has just gone into its fourth reprint. Huzzah, I say!
Oh, and did anyone see the Top 100 books at SF Crowsnest a short while ago, in which vol 1, SOE, came in at #86, while vol 2, TOW, stormed up to #21. Which is absolutely beyond terrific. Here’s a link to the list;
Anyway, you`ll be glad to know that henceforth I intend to post here on the blog with a somewhat greater frequency than of late. The final sections of TAS were very demanding, and combined with a family crisis left me with little time for other thoughts. But the coming weeks will be rather different.
Upcoming events, as well as the publication of Orphaned Worlds in mass-market edition (March 3rd), I shall be attending Eastercon at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole from April 22nd-25th – I shouldnt be too difficult to find if you want to say hi or get me to sign stuff. I have let the con organisers know that I’m up for doing panels but we`ll have to wait and see.
Another imminent event of grand significance will be the publication of the 1st volume of Dave Wingrove’s Chung Kuo saga – reloaded! Vol 1, Son Of Heaven, is due out on March 1st and is the first of 2 prequel volumes, showing how our world turned into that dominated by the Han and their vast cities. I’ve read a review copy, thoroughly enjoyed it, and shall be sticking up my own review here in a day or two.
Also, in the upcoming weeks I’ll see if I can get permission to post a coupla excerpts from the 1st draft, just as a teaser for you all. Something else i want to do in the next couple of months is to try my hand at some flash fiction, short pieces just a few hundred words long focussing on a few of the characters from the trilogy. We`ll see how that pans out.
