So, Who To Cast In My Imaginary Movie Of ‘Ancestral Machines’?

Posted on January 18th 2016 | Leave a comment

Here’s a little bit o’ devil may care speculation on which actors I like in the movie of my book. And, yknow, who can tell what’s gonna happen?

http://mybookthemovie.blogspot.co.uk/2016/01/michael-cobleys-ancestral-machines.html

Here we are, from left to right – Lt Samantha Brock (Zoe Saldana), Captain Brannan Pyke (Colin O’Donoghue) and Dervla (Mallory Jansen)

And What A Very Big Convention It Was

Posted on August 21st 2014 | Leave a comment

Was at Loncon3, the 2014 World SF Convention, held in London at the Excel Centre, a vast megahangar of such staggering proportions it felt like it had dropped off the end of one of Banksie’s GSVs!

I think its about half a mile long and, astonishingly, amongst all the fooderies and eateries there was not one newsagent or anywhere selling what one might generally think of as groceries.

The con itself was a massive effort, chock full of tremendous programming over innumerable programme streams. I was on the first panel of the con, on Lord of the Rings and how its seen by children and young adults, in both book and film media. Later, on the Saturday, I was on a panel about Iain Banks’ works, trying to find out what the descriptor ‘Banksian’ really entails. I came up with the notion that the Iain M Banks books are all about Solving The Puzzle Of The Past, and the Culture/SF books are about Solving The Puzzle Of The Present (thought I`m sure there are exceptions to both)

I also did a signing in the exhibit hall, to which about 7-8 attendees came, then a reading which was late on, about 8.30pm, resulting predictably in less than a handful of curious fans who were on hand to hear me read a section from the new book, Ancestral Machines (you lucky people!)

Generally, though, I felt it was too large and exhausting to get around really – although the daily trek to and from Islington might have been a contributory factor. If I do another Worldcon, it would have to be with a hotel room.

Anyway, got back home to Irvine on the evening of Monday 18th, up the next day and straight back into the writing of the last chapter of Ancestral Machines! – not long to go now.

Humanity’s Fire Book Movie (late arrival)

Posted on May 18th 2013 | Leave a comment

Cannot believe that I somehow forgot to post the link here to the movie-trailer for The Ascendant Stars – it was on the list of posts and reachouts to fulfill but….ach, must have had a senior moment of some kind. Darn, another coupla million braincells gone west. But anyway, now, here it is!

The Battle For Darien

The animator is a Yorkshire guy called Ingram Blakelock, who has done various other pieces including the video for the band, A Forest Of Stars, for their track Gatherer Of The Pure. Here’s a link to it -

So To Prestatyn – The SFX Weekender 2012

Posted on January 28th 2012 | Leave a comment

Some of you reading this may well have been to one of the previous SFX Weekender jamborees, but this will be my first. Catching the train on the morning of Friday February 3rd down to Prestatyn on the north Wales coast (not so very far southwest of Liverpool), and to the Pontins holiday resort there which the mighty SFX organisation has taken over for several days of unbridled SF-flavoured knees-up. There will be panels, talks, exclusive previews, films, retro-TV screenings, and celebs, celebs, celebs out the yingyang.

Er, amongs whom will be my good self. And I have things to do, to whit an autograph session at 10am on the Saturday morning, in conjunction with the immensely agreeable Jaine Fenn, after which I`ll be on a panel about space opera at 12 noon. Much relaxation and chinwagging shall ensue, have no doubt about this!

For more info on the Weekender schedule, see the following link:

Chung Kuo Vol 1: Son of Heaven update

Posted on April 24th 2010 | 12 Comments so far

Hot news from Corvus, soon-to-be publisher of the new, improved and expanded Chung Kuo epic from David Wingrove. Their new catalogue devotes a 2-page spread to the Chung Kuo books, including a blurbtastic summary and this terrific cover for book one:

Chung Kuo 1 - Son of Heaven

How utterly splendid is that? For more information, including that summary and the full list of the sequence’s titles, go to (see below) -

http://thewertzone.blogspot.com/2010/04/corvus-atlantic-release-full-schedule.html

Many thanks to Adam Whitehead at the Wertzone.

UPDATE

Just spoken to Mr Wingrove and sadly it seems that the Corvus information is now obsolete: due to various hinderings and hamperings, book 1, Son of Heaven, is now scheduled for a Spring 2011 release. On the upside, the original text of SOH has itself undergone revisions and improvements resulting in its being turned into 2 volumes, Son Of Heaven and Daylight On Iron Mountain. Corvus had planned to show the Chung Kuo sequence in all its glory at the London Book Fair but the Volcanic-Ash-From-Hell prevented many book buyers from attending; the figure I`ve heard is something like 80% absences. However, the next big world book event is the ABA, the American Book Association jamboree at Bookexpo America in New York in May; after that, its the Frankfurt Book Fair in October (I think). More info when available.
